The Great Rose Parade Trip

Saturday, December 31, 2005

We walked from the Bandfest to the Huntington "Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens". By that time the rain had started in earnest and we hurried from building to building in our ponchos. The library exhibition of old books and manuscripts was spectacular, from the Guttenberg Bible to Shakespeare to Civil War documents. The art gallery was equally impressive, although little of it was modern. We did get to see Gainsborough's "Blue Boy" and other famous masterpieces.

We called for the hotel's van to rescue us rather than walk back in the downpour. But the girls couldn't resist the opportunity to stop for a little shopping first...

In the morning we walked from our hotel to Pasadena State College to see some of the bands that will later be in the parade performing on the football field. There was a light drizzle, but nothing that would stop these intrepid tourists. The bands were enthusiastic and mostly good. You could certainly tell the difference in quality at the college level compared to the high school bands.
